A central topic of the conference was Mexico's position on a U.S. initiative seeking to impose a tax on remittances sent from that country. Sheinbaum called this proposal unconstitutional in the U.S., arguing that it would lead to double taxation for Mexicans who live and work there.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Mexican ambassador to the United States, is speaking with legislators; all the necessary arguments are being presented, because it doesn't just affect Mexico," the president noted, noting that the measure would also harm other Latin American countries and even India. This defense of migrant income is crucial, given that remittances represent a vital source of foreign currency for Mexico and a livelihood for millions of families.

On the diplomatic front, Sheinbaum announced that next Monday she will meet with Ron Johnson, the new United States ambassador to Mexico, a meeting that will surely address this and other issues on the complex bilateral agenda.

In an effort to strengthen domestic production and consumption, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, Secretary of Economy, presented a voluntary agreement with the business sector to increase the domestic content in various commercial establishments between 2025 and 2028.

The specific objectives of increasing national content are:

  • Self-service: From the current 50% to 70%.
  • Department Stores: From 30% to 42%.
  • Retailers: 50% to 70%.
  • Pharmacies: From 40% to 55%.
  • Digital commerce platforms: They are committed to promoting and marketing products made in Mexico, highlighting them in their marketplaces.

Ebrard explained that this initiative seeks not only to promote Mexican consumption but also to boost domestic production and, consequently, create more jobs in the country. This type of agreement reflects an economic policy that seeks to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen local production chains.

In the framework of Teachers' Day , President Claudia Sheinbaum began her press conference by congratulating all of Mexico's teachers. She announced that she would later hold an event with education leaders where topics such as salary increases and other benefits, primarily for elementary school teachers, would be discussed.

"Later, we'll have an event with teachers, and there we'll talk about the salary increase and other actions and benefits for teachers," he announced. While the specific details of the increase were not offered during the morning press conference, the promise comes on a significant date and in a context where the education sector's demands for better working conditions and salaries are constant. The materialization of these announcements will be key to the morale and well-being of one of the fundamental pillars of the country's development.
